Waterworks

We created a new urban plan for Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht. The guiding theme for this design is water. Water is integral part of the identity and networks of this area. We made an urban plan based on four principles: diversity, local identity, sustainability and networks. In our plan water is added in two different forms: watersquares and canals. The watersquares create places to buffer water during heavy rains. The canals take water from the river into the city. This creates a network of waterways in which waterbusses transfer people through the city. Besides the network, the canals connect the people with water and thus reconnect them with their original identity. By using Transit Oriented Development we will create several new dwelling over a period of fifty years. We combine these development with public transport connections and watermanagement. On both sides of the river we designed new quays that fill up during high water. By placing waterproof appartments on these quays we use space in an efficient way while connecting people with the water. My role in the project was that of the property developer. It was my responsibility to locate plots for development. I assigned different functions and building typologies to these plots. Using this information I made a budget for the municipality. With this budget the municipality can build new stations, highways and raise the railroad tracks.
